On Wednesday, April 1, the largest tobacco-tax hike in federal history will go into effect. A bill signed by President Obama early in his administration raises the federal tax per pack of cigarettes from 39 cents to $1.01. Federal taxes on cigars, chewing tobacco and other tobacco products will also increase substantially.

Rising cigarette prices and a sputtering economy are causing more tobacco users to search for ways to quit.
A new poll shows two-thirds of Michigan voters favor a smoking ban in workplaces, including restaurants and Detroit's casinos. A House committee is expected to vote Wednesday on a statewide smoking ban. Detroit's three casinos argue it would chase smoking customers to Indian-owned casinos that would not be affected. TV campaign urges parents to quit smoking (UPI)

NEW YORK, March 30 (UPI) -- Parents who smoke should think seriously about the impact their death would have on their children, a media campaign by New York City health officials says.

A new anti-smoking campaign in the City reminds smokers of the emotional and physical concerns that smoking poses to children.
A public vote will be held April 7 to determine the fate of the smoking ban bill, which, if passed, would make it illegal to smoke inside or within ten feet of the main entrance of any public building.

Three out of ten Europeans smoke every day or once in a while, over the age of 15. Greece has the highest proportion of smokers than average, according to a Eurobarometer survey. It says 42% of Greeks smoke. Bulgaria places next, with 39%. Northern Europe is not exempt, with 37% of Latvians smoking.
