California Smokers’ Helpline is sending free nicotine patches to people in 34 counties in California who call 1-800-NO-BUTTS and enroll in the free telephone-based quitting program will receive a free two-week starter kit of patches, while supplies last. 20% back to smoking after price hike

Twenty percent of people who quit smoking because of the Oct. 1 cigarette price hikes have started lighting up again, according to an online survey by Macromill Inc. But the poll, conducted Nov. 1 and 2 with 500 adult respondents, also found that 62 percent of the people who stopped smoking due to the price increases have managed to refrain from smoking even a single cigarette.

DES MOINES — Despite decreases in adult smoking, more Iowans are asking for help in quitting.The number of calls to Iowa’s helpline for quitting tobacco use skyrocketed in late December and January.

New Yorkers have set a record low smoking rate for the state as reports show a slight rise in cigarette smoking nationwide. A state Health Department spokeswoman said that only 16.8 percent of New York state residents say they smoked in 2008, the lowest adult smoking rate on record for the state. Last year's state smoking rate was 18.9 percent.
