DES MOINES — Despite decreases in adult smoking, more Iowans are asking for help in quitting.The number of calls to Iowa’s helpline for quitting tobacco use skyrocketed in late December and January.

New Yorkers have set a record low smoking rate for the state as reports show a slight rise in cigarette smoking nationwide. A state Health Department spokeswoman said that only 16.8 percent of New York state residents say they smoked in 2008, the lowest adult smoking rate on record for the state. Last year's state smoking rate was 18.9 percent.

Results from the state's most recent survey show the smoking rate has dropped to 15.3 percent -- down from 16.5 percent the previous year.
