In one of the first studies to examine smoking's effect on the brain, those who smoked more than two packs a day in middle age were 114% more likely than non-smokers to develop dementia later in life. Heavy smoking at middle age more than doubles the risk of Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia later in life, according to one of the first long-term studies to examine the issue.
